Correspondence with Popes

Bull Gloria in Excelsis (Rome February 869). Pope Hadrian II (867-872) permitted using of the ancient Slovakian language in the church, with limitation that gospel must be readed in Latin first.

 

(manuscript was preserved in work "The Life of  St.Methodius" (chapter 8th) only, the work came into existence in 885 and was preserved in 8 copies, most ancient is from 12th-13th century, it is stored in Uspen monastery in Moscow)

 

Letter (Rome - June 14th 879). The pope John VIII (872-882) wrote to king Svätopluk, that his "right faith" is in danger and he must send archbishop Methodius into the Rome. The letter is testimony about intrigues against Methodius after his inauguration to church supervising in ancient Slovaks territory. This is the reason of Svätopluk request for pope´s advice.

 

Letter (Rome - June 14th 879). The pope John VIII called archbishop Methodius into the Rome, to explain accusations about his incorrect teaching during church services, and his using of the ancient Slovak language.

Bull Industriae Tuae (Rome - June 880). Pope John VIII confirm Methodius as archbishop and his "right faith", established Nitra episcopate,  designate Viching as his bishop, confirm ancient Slovakian language as church service language. Pope take Svätopluk and his kingdom under his protection,  this fact absolutely set Svätopluk to status of other christian monarchs in Europa at that time.

Letter (Rome after September 885). Pope Stephen V (885-891) take king Svätopluk under his protection, give him advice on faith, confirm Viching as bishop of Nitra, condemn Methodius and forbid use of ancient Slovak´s language in church.
